What does voiceover work cost in 2026?

TLDR:Compare like-for-like deliverables before comparing voiceover prices. Published ranges help with planning, but usage, revisions, and review work determine the real budget.

The cheapest voiceover quote can become the expensive one when the script changes after approval. Voiceover rates in 2026 still depend on what you're buying: a performance, a finished recording, a usage license, or a production service that combines them.

A useful budget names those things separately. It also distinguishes a published guide from a binding quote. The benchmarks below come from named providers, not a claim that every narrator charges the same amount. Currency is US dollars unless stated otherwise.

What do published voiceover rate guides actually measure?

A rate card describes a particular market and scope. A non-union guide is not a union agreement, and a marketplace suggestion is not a legal minimum. Read the category before reading the price.

Voice Crafters' Industry Standard Voice Over Rates, updated August 11, 2026, describes its figures as based on the Global Voice Acting Academy guide for non-union work. These are useful planning ranges, not evidence of the average invoice paid across the industry.

By contrast, the current Voices pricing page, whose displayed page metadata was last modified July 13, 2025, emphasizes talent-set fees based on scope, usage, and experience. It doesn't support treating an old downloadable Voices rate sheet as a fresh survey of current prices.

When you request bids, send the same brief to everyone. Include the final script, destination, territories, campaign duration, editing expectations, and delivery format. Otherwise, you may be comparing narration alone with a package that already includes post-production and licensing.

A clay figure considering the scope of a voiceover budget

How much does narration cost per finished hour?

Per finished hour, often shortened to PFH, prices the duration of the delivered audio rather than the time spent recording it. A session hour and a finished hour are different units.

Voice Crafters' August 11, 2026 guide lists audiobook narration at USD 200 to 500 per finished hour and labels that as the finished, edited rate. Confirm proofing, mastering, file splitting, and corrections in the actual offer. Don't assume every narrator using PFH includes identical services.

That distinction matters because a long manuscript creates work beyond reading. Names need checking. Chapters need consistent sound. Someone must listen for omitted phrases, repeated words, and abrupt edits. A polished voice demo doesn't establish who owns those tasks.

Nor should you multiply a short commercial session rate into an audiobook estimate. Advertising prices reflect usage and commercial context; long-form narration reflects a different production commitment. Start with the relevant category and ask the performer to explain anything outside it.

Our guide to cost per finished minute helps turn a production estimate into a complete budget, including review time that a voice-generation quote can leave invisible.

What does a short voiceover project cost?

For a concrete comparison, these are selected corporate narration entries from Voice Crafters' August 11, 2026 guide. The durations and word bands are that source's categories, not a promise about how quickly your script should be read.

Project scope Published planning range Named source and date
Corporate narration, up to 300 words, roughly 1 to 2 finished minutes USD 350 to 450 Voice Crafters, August 11, 2026
Corporate narration, 301 to 750 words, roughly 3 to 5 finished minutes USD 450 to 550 Voice Crafters, August 11, 2026
Corporate narration, 751 to 1,500 words, roughly 5 to 10 finished minutes USD 600 to 700 Voice Crafters, August 11, 2026

These are project bands. They are not a per-minute charge that you multiply by the video's runtime.

Also check whether your explainer is genuinely corporate narration. A product demonstration hosted on your own site and the same recording used in a paid campaign may require different licenses. Tell the talent about intended paid placement rather than discovering the difference after launch.

For union-covered work, obtain the applicable current agreement and rate sheet from the union or your signatory producer. A non-union web guide cannot replace contractual session minimums, use payments, or benefit contributions.

What should pickups and revisions cost?

There isn't a universal pickup tariff. A pickup is a replacement passage; the reason for replacing it determines the charge. A narrator's mistake is different from your rewritten offer, and both differ from a new creative direction.

For a transparent individual example, Ty Eden's Retakes and Revisions Policy, an undated page checked September 19, 2026, lists USD 50 for minor revisions of one or two words and USD 100 minimum for changes of more than two words. Those are that performer's published terms, not industry averages or upper limits.

The same policy includes performer-error retakes at no cost and an initial performance-retake round for undirected sessions. It treats unspecified pronunciation preferences as billable revisions. That is a useful reminder to provide an approved pronunciation reference before recording.

Ask your chosen provider to define the revision window, included rounds, minimum charge, and point at which a rewrite becomes a new job. Send consolidated notes with surrounding sentences. An isolated replacement word can sound wrong even when it is pronounced correctly.

Why can the same recording have different prices?

Production and permission are separate. The labor needed to read a sentence may stay unchanged while the value and restrictions of its use change substantially.

A talent agreement can distinguish paid advertising from internal training, identify where the campaign runs, and limit how long it remains active. Exclusivity can restrict the performer's ability to accept other work. Those conditions deserve their own discussion rather than being hidden inside a generic audio fee.

Keep expansions explicit. Ask what happens if a regional campaign becomes national, an internal recording becomes public, or a different brand wants to reuse the performance. Voice cloning also requires its own informed authorization; possessing a recording doesn't grant permission to synthesize new speech from it.

A practical estimate therefore separates production, permitted use, revision scope, and additional deliverables. The total is easier to defend when a client can see what changes with the brief.

What changes when voice generation happens locally?

Local generation changes the production cost model, not the need for judgment or rights clearance. Vois runs generation on your computer, with unlimited generation and no token or per-character fees. You can test a rewrite without purchasing another block of generated speech.

That can be useful for changing tutorials, recurring announcements, and the version-heavy work described on our voiceover production page. But it doesn't make editing, approval, or a licensed performer's consent free. A voice-cloning agreement may still carry compensation and usage restrictions.

The work moves toward script preparation, choosing a suitable voice, checking pronunciation, arranging the timeline, and listening to the finished output. Our pronunciation dictionary addresses repeatable names and terminology, but a person still needs to approve the result in context.

Compare the current options on the pricing page against your own revision workload. Don't compare a software license with a fully managed human production package and call the difference pure savings. Compare equivalent deliverables, then account for the work you will perform yourself.

How do you build a budget you can actually approve?

Write the brief before requesting a price. Freeze the script where possible, label uncertain passages, and obtain pronunciation approvals. Ask for a sample of the actual material rather than relying only on a polished demo.

Then document what acceptance means: correct words, appropriate performance, usable files, and the agreed permission to distribute them. Assign a reviewer and a final approver so conflicting notes don't become repeated production cycles.

Choose the method that fits the job. Human direction may be central to a demanding performance. Local synthesis may suit frequent factual updates. Neither choice removes your responsibility to produce something clear, accurate, and properly authorized.

Price the whole job, then make the next revision a planned decision.
